What is forbidden to take on a plane

Baggage regulations can sometimes be confusing even for experienced travelers. They differ from different airlines and from different countries. First of all, passengers, of course, think about baggage allowance, allowable weight and size of baggage. However, do not forget that there are certain things that are forbidden to take on board an airplane. That is why it is very important to carefully consider what you need to carry with you in your hand luggage, and what you can not take with you on board the aircraft, put it in your checked baggage. To avoid unpleasant situations, let's talk about what is forbidden to take on a plane.

Complete prohibition of carriage

The lists of things that are prohibited to be taken on board an aircraft are based on aviation safety rules. First, consider a list of items that are prohibited for transportation in principle, even in checked baggage:

  • Explosive and flammable substances.
  • Of the most used things, these include: all kinds of fireworks, ammunition, flammable fuels (diesel, gasoline), matches and lighters, paint thinners and spray paint in sprays, alcoholic beverages with an alcohol content of more than 70%, alcohol.
  • Toxic, corrosive, corrosive substances. Including alkalis and acids, gas sprays, mercury, chlorine, biohazardous substances (for example, viruses), poisons and chemicals, radioactive substances.
  • Firearms, except in special cases. The airline can only accept weapons for transportation if the passenger has permission to store and carry them. During transportation, the weapon can only be in the luggage compartment, discharged and disassembled, in a specially designed cover for it. By the way, toys imitating weapons are forbidden to be carried in hand luggage, no matter how harmless they are.

It is equally important before departure to check the list of products prohibited for import or export in the countries of interest to you. These may be ordinary things at first glance (for example, you cannot import any fishing equipment into Russia, and shells and corals cannot be exported from Thailand and the Philippines.

Baggage allowance

The allowable dimensions and weight of hand luggage in an airplane are limited by certain standards. At the same time, there are no universal parameters for baggage that a passenger can carry with him in the cabin: basically, the norms depend on the carrier, the class of service paid, and also the flight distance.

In any case, the allowable weight and size of hand luggage will have to be known in advance: in order not to pay for an excess and to avoid the most unpleasant situation of getting rid of unnecessary things before the departure.

With increased attention, it is worth studying the prices of low-cost airlines and the proposals for new promotional tariffs before buying tickets, this applies both to domestic airlines and foreign ones. Cheap flights can be subject to restrictions: without luggage or hand luggage or with more stringent requirements for the weight of luggage.

What should not be carried on board in hand luggage?

The most noticeable restriction on cabin baggage applies to all types of liquids. This includes cosmetics (oils, creams, lotions, shower gels, shampoos, shaving foams, toothpastes, perfumes, sprays), as well as any drinks, including plain water. All of the above may be taken with you in your hand luggage only if these substances are packaged in containers up to 100 ml. In addition, they must be placed in a transparent plastic bag with a lock, and the total volume of liquids should not exceed 1 liter. An exception to this rule is baby food and medicines needed during the flight (although the real need for their use will have to be proved, for example, by official paper from a doctor).

These restrictions do not apply to liquids purchased at duty free stores, which are usually packaged in sealed bags immediately after purchase. However, it is worth remembering that if transit is planned in your route, purchases from duty free can still be asked to be removed to your main baggage.

In the hand luggage any objects that can cause injuries, for example, any sharp-cutting objects (scissors, knives, nail files and scissors, screwdrivers and other working tools) are also unacceptable.

It is forbidden to take on board some food products. In particular, it is impossible to carry canned goods in hand luggage, therefore caviar, popular as a souvenir from Russia, will need to be packed in a suitcase and checked in your luggage.

Remember that animals are also forbidden to take on board an airplane, so you should inform the airline in advance about your desire to fly with your pet so that your pet will be allocated a seat on the flight (their number is always strictly limited).

Among the items that can not be taken on board as hand luggage, is sports equipment (skis, skates, golf clubs and more).

We hope this article helped you understand more about what is forbidden to take on a plane and what you should pay special attention to when planning to fly.
